Fire Training Facility Nears Completion

Firefighters across Sequoyah County will soon be able to stay closer to home for their training.

The Sequoyah County Firefighter Training Center, 850 W. Eppler in Sallisaw is expected to be open in about two months, said Anthony Armstrong, Sallisaw’s fire chief.

The center will allow firefighters throughout Sequoyah County to receive hands-on experience with live burns and other exercises, Armstrong said. Before the local fire training center, he said, firefighters had to travel to Poteau or Tahlequah for their training.

There is still work to be done on the facility, according to Armstrong, including adding fencing to the site.

An agreement between Oklahoma State University and the center will allow OSU to facilitate Firefighter 1 certification at the Sallisaw site, Armstrong added.
