Fire Destroys Home Early Sunday

A home at 2750 W. Cherokee in Sallisaw was destroyed by fire early Sunday.

Sallisaw Fire Chief Anthony Armstrong said the fire department was dispatched by 9-1-1 at 4 a.m. Sunday.

“The fire was already through the roof when firefighters arrived,” Armstrong said.

Firefighters had the fire under control in about 30 minutes, Armstrong said, and had left the site by 7:30 a.m.

But the fire rekindled at about 12:55 p.m. on Sunday and firefighters had to return to the site and douse the flames again.

Armstrong explained, “The roof collapsed and fell on the floor, rekindling the fire.”

The home is considered a total loss and an early tentative loss estimate was set at $55,000.

Armstrong said no one was living in the house at the time, and it was being remodeled by owner Ed Cullipher.

The cause of the blaze is undetermined, Armstrong said. The home was not insured, he added.
