Sherry Hullinger, KI BOIS Head Start assistant director, said this week that the renovation of an old middle school building as a new Early Head Start Center in Sallisaw is on track for a mid-January open house.
The KI BOIS Head Start program was selected to receive an Early Head Start (EHS) grant of about $300,000 that will serve birth to three-year-old children.
The KI BOIS Sallisaw Early Head Start Center will be in collaboration with Sallisaw Public Schools, and the old middle school band room is being renovated using KI BOIS Early Head Start funding to meet federal, state and local guidelines.
The KI BOIS Sallisaw EHS Center will have two classrooms with a total of 16 infants and toddlers. There will be two teachers in each classroom plus a part time aide in each classroom, and a full time center director.
Applications for those positions and a fulltime cook are now being taken. For more information call Kimberly Tyer at 918-431- 1284.
The students will stay with the same teaching team from the time they enroll until they transition to their pre-school classrooms at 3 years old. Participation in the Early Head Start Program is at no cost to the participants who are selected using an income-eligible based criteria.
