Cherokee Runoff Election Is Saturday


Cherokee citizens in the Cherokee Nation’s District 5 will go to the election polls again on Saturday to choose a council member.

District 5 covers the western half of Sequoyah County and a small portion of eastern Muskogee County.

The runoff candidates are E.O. Smith and Uriah Grass.

In the June 3 election Smith collected 256 votes, or 39.45 percent. Grass collected 207 votes, or 30.90 percent, narrowly defeating Dink Scott. Scott had 199 votes or 29.70 percent of the votes cast.

Voters will cast their ballots at Gore City Hall or Vian School.

A runoff election is also slated in District 9 where Mike Shambugh and Clifton Hughes will be on the ballot. District 9 is made up of Delaware and Mayes Counties.

The newly elected council members will be sworn into office on Aug. 14 at a regular meeting of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council in Tahlequah.
