Sequoyah County Sheriff Larry Lane, who was sworn into office Tuesday, was given his grandfather’s gun, a Smith & Wesson .357, by his family.
Lane’s grandfather, Amos Lane, worked with the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office and Reserves for over 30 years carrying his .357 pistol.
Lane said of his late grandfather, “He was my best friend. He got me started in law enforcement. He pinned my first badge on me 26 years ago today, on Jan. 3, 1991.”
Lois Lane, Sheriff Lane’s grandmother, also worked for the sheriff’s office.
Lane, who ousted incumbent Sheriff Ron Lockhart in the November general election, was sworn into office by District Judge Jeff Payton on Tuesday morning, and said his first day in office was, “Hectic!”
Lane furnished his new office with a desk purchased and donated by Sallisaw Overhead Door Co.
