Sallisaw Woman Brings Baby to Casino

A Sallisaw woman was charged Dec. 30 with child neglect after reportedly trying to give her 3-month-old to workers and a bystander at Cherokee Casino in Roland so she could play, court records show.

Ahlexiah Cheater, 22, faces up to life in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 on the felony charge and her bond was set at $5,000.

On Dec. 30, a Roland police officer was dispatched to the casino in reference to an intoxicated woman attempting to drive away from the casino with a baby.

Upon arrival at the casino, the officer spoke with casino security, who said the woman, Cheater, had appeared heavily intoxicated and while speaking with the security guards accidentally locked her child and the keys to the vehicle in the car.

The officer then spoke with Cheater, who reportedly smelled of alcohol and was unsteady on her feet. Her infant was in the car in a car seat crying with all the doors locked. The officer deemed it appropriate for the safety of the child to access the car with his vehicle unlocking kit.

A casino security guard told police that she observed Cheater in the casino holding the baby. When she told her she couldn’t bring a baby into a casino, Cheater said, “Well, I’m trying to play, so you can have it,” and tried to hand the guard the child. The guard then told the casino security chief about the situation.

The security chief told the police officer that when they were walking Cheater out she handed her baby to a random male bystander and told him to take her because she was going to jail. That is when casino security called Roland police.

Cheater told the police officer that she had not been drinking before she got to the casino, but a review of security footage proved that to be untrue. She did not drink anything at the casino. She also said the baby wasn’t with her when she first arrived. The officer felt that she showed apparent signs of inebriation other than alcohol.

The officer then notified the Department of Human Services and requested a joint response. The baby was placed with her grandmother.
