The Sallisaw Fire Department said farewell last week to a third-generation firefighter who retired after a 25-year career.

Leo Farmer was given a commemorative ring to mark his time with the fire department, Sallisaw Fire Chief Anthony Armstrong said Monday. Though a party honoring Farmer was impossible because of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, Armstrong said that didn’t stop his firefighters from celebrating the end of Farmer’s lengthy career.

Farmer started with the department January 5, 1995 and retired January 31, 2020.

Farmer’s father, James Virgil Farmer, served with the Sallisaw Fire Department from 1959-1979, and his grandfather, Grady Farmer, was a Sallisaw firefighter from 1954-1974.
