Master Sgt. Joshua L. Wheeler, a U.S. special operations soldier, was killed Thursday during a raid to free captives from an Islamic State-controlled prison in northern Iraq, the Department of Defense has confirmed.
Wheeler, 39, is from Roland.
According to Stars and Stripes, the U.S. military news, Wheeler took part in the prison raid near the town of Hawijah in Kirkuk Province, after U.S. and Iraqi officials received "information that the hostages faced imminent mass execution," Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said.
Sgt. Wheeler was wounded in the raid and died later, according to military officials.
