Voters in Gore will decide on Oct. 13 if the town will add a one-cent sales tax during a Gore Municipal election.
Town Administrator Horace Lindley said that the one-cent sales tax, if approved, will be dedicated to town services. He said 50 percent of the new tax will be dedicated to the maintenance of Gore's streets and alleys, and 50 percent will be dedicated to the police and fire departments.
Gore currently has a three-cent sales tax, which will go to four cents if the proposal is approved.
Lindley said he expects the one-cent tax will add about $10,000 per month to the town's coffers and could save Gore residents money on their insurance rates.
"We just received good news," Lindley explained. "We just had our ISO rating reduced from 8 to 7."
ISO is the rating agency that rates a community's fire protection and preparedness. The lower the rating, the lower the insurance premium.
Lindley said that part of the new sales tax dedicated to the fire department will be used to increase water and improve fire plugs, as the town works to lower its ISO rating even further.
"This ties in with our sales tax. Adequate water and fire plugs will save money on insurance," Lindley said.
