Seven railroad crossings in and near Sequoyah County will be improved over the next three years, after the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) Commission approved funding for the projects at their meeting Monday.
Cody Byrd of the ODOT Media and Public Relations Division said the crossings in the county and nearby include signal and surface improvements on the Kansas City Southern crossing on Dogwood in Sallisaw, and signal improvements at the Union Pacific crossings at Cherokee and Dogwood, Cherokee and Wheeler Street, Cherokee and Elm Street and Cherokee and Maple Street, all in Sallisaw; at the Union Pacific crossing on Fargo Street in Muldrow; and the Kansas City Southern crossing on Bunch Road in Bunch.
Boyd said the improvements will be done over the next three years and details on the local improvements are not finalized.
About $100 million is expected to be spent over the next three years to improve surfaces and signals at 300 rail crossings statewide. Previously, ODOT had only about $8 million a year in rail safety program funds to spend which improved about 25 crossings per year. These improvements will be funded by combining proceeds from the recent sale of the Sooner Sub rail line, dedicated rail safety funds from ODOT and funding from city and county partners.
