A 57-year-old Belfonte man, arrested Thursday as he tried to escape through a tunnel, is being held in the county jail without bond.
Vincent Small was booked into the county jail in Sallisaw on charges of grand larceny, domestic assault and battery by strangulation and two counts of domestic abuse.
He was arrested Thursday by Sequoyah County sheriff's deputies and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Sheriff Ron Lockhart described Small as a survivalist and said Small had threatened to not be taken alive.
When officers arrived at Small's home at about 2 p.m. Thursday, the suspect attempted to escape on foot through a tunnel under his home. Lockhart said deputies were aware of the tunnel and were waiting for him at the exit. After a short foot pursuit Small was taken into custody. His arraignment on the charges is scheduled for Wednesday in Sequoyah County District Court, Sallisaw.
