The Cherokee Nation is replacing six transit buses with new American Disabilities Act compliant vans after receiving a $321,000 grant from the Federal Transit Administration.
The Cherokee Nation is using a $321,000 grant from the Federal Transit Administration to buy six transit buses that meet the needs of riders with disabilities.
The tribe uses 16 transit vans to shuttle employees and tribal citizens to work sites and health or other appointments throughout northeastern Oklahoma. The grant will allow the tribe to buy six transit vans that are compliant with the American Disabilities Act to replace aging vans in its fleet.
“Our bus fleet provides an invaluable service for our citizens, guaranteeing they can travel to medical appointments, community meetings and jobs in a safe and reliable way,” said Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. “Ensuring the vehicles are modernized and in compliance with federal laws is good for our government, but more importantly it will enable the tribe to provide more care and personal attention to Cherokee Nation citizens who need assistance and who utilize the transportation program.”
Cherokee Nation contracts with Ki Bois Area Transit System, Pelivan Transit, Muskogee County Transit and Cimarron Public Transit to provide low-cost transportation throughout the tribe’s northeastern Oklahoma jurisdiction. More than 94,000 rides were provided through Cherokee Nation subsidized transit routes in 2016. The fixed routes and on-demand service transit buses cost $1 round-trip.
“Cherokee Nation Transit Services is extremely pleased that our grant application for replacement transit vans was approved by the FTA,” said Transportation Director Michael Lynn. “By replacing aging buses with new ADA-compliant vans, we are making transportation safer and more comfortable for our tribal citizens.”
