A 28 year old man was killed in Sallisaw around 11:15 pm, June 2nd, after being involved in a one vehicle accident, according to Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart.
On Monday night a Sequoyah County Deputy was traveling south bound on Hwy 59 just south of the Sallisaw Airport. The deputy observed a vehicle traveling north bound that veered into the south bound lane. The deputy was forced to swerve to avoid a collision and quickly turned around to stop the vehicle, according to Lockhart. The deputy activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop the vehicle but it drove off the roadway on the southbound lane and came to rest in a ditch.
According to Lockhart, the deputy then contacted the Sallisaw Police Department. When the deputy approached the driver's door he found the driver to be unresponsive. Authorities were forced to bust out the window. Sallisaw Police were on the scene and CPR was started. Local EMS officials were called to the scene and the driver was transported to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to Sheriff Lockhart.
The body is being sent to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy. According to officials, it appears the driver was suffering from an unidentified medical problem. The name of the deceased has not been released pending notification of family.
