Attempted Choking by Rope Sends One to Hospital, One to Jail

The Sequoyah County dispatch received a call at approximately 11 a.m. Monday morning regarding an ongoing incident on the east bound ramp of I-40 in Vian. The caller reported that a subject was choking an elderly male inside a pickup truck. Authorities with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol quickly arrived on the scene and found a male subject, later identified as Tony Douglas White, of Bristow, Oklahoma, standing on top of the victim's truck yelling, "I didn't kill him." The officer discovered an elderly male inside the truck with a rope around his neck. The rope was removed and EMS was called to the scene. The victim was transported to Sparks Hospital in Fort Smith and admitted in critical condition. White was taken into custody.

During the investigation, the sheriff's department learned that the victim had picked up White at The Flamingo Hotel in Fort Smith and was giving him a ride to an undisclosed location. During the ride White began demanding cigarettes and threatening to kill the elderly man.

According to Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart, White was arrested for assault and battery with intent to kill. Lockhart also stated that White has a lengthy criminal history.
