Mugshot Released of Elton Darrell Vanzant

Vian police have released the names of two women struck, one fatally, at about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday in a hit-and-run. Vian Police Chief Alan Ellis said  Linda Finney Drew, 55, was killed in the hit-and-run and Janice Shade was injured. Ellis said the two women were walking along a Vian street when both were struck by a hit-and-run driver. Drew was pronounced dead at the scene. Shade was transported by ambulance to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital in Sallisaw where she was treated and released. 

Ellis said the investigation into the fatality uncovered the suspect, Elton Darrell Vanzant, 74 (shown above), of Cookson. He said Vanzant was arrested in Cherokee County. He may have been intoxicated, and blood was taken for the investigation. The suspect is being held in the Sequoyah County Jail in Sallisaw without bond. Jail officials said he was booked on charges of leaving the scene of a fatality accident and negligent homicide, motor vehicle. Ellis said the arrest of the suspect was a joint effort of the Vian Police, the Sequoyah County Sheriff's office, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and Cherokee County deputies.
