Hit-and-Run Suspect Arrested in Cherokee County

Vian police want to make sure the families of the victims are notified before they release the names of two women struck, one fatally, at about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Vian Police Chief Alan Ellis said Wednesday morning that he was awaiting a call from the town's attorney before releasing the names. Ellis said two women were walking along a Vian street when both were struck by a hit-and-run driver. One woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The other was transported by ambulance to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital in Sallisaw where she was treated and released.

Ellis said the investigation into the fatality uncovered the suspect, and the man was arrested in Cherokee County. He may have been intoxicated, and blood was taken for the investigation. The suspect is now being held without bond in the Sequoyah County Jail in Sallisaw without bond. Ellis said the arrest of the suspect was a combined effort of the Vian Police, the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and Cherokee County deputies. Ellis said he hoped to be able to release the names of those involved some time Wednesday. By Sally Maxwell, Senior News Director
