Groups Work Against Domestic Abuse

Sallisaw Mayor Julie Ferguson, on the left holding proclamation, signed the proclamation last week recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Sandra Girdner, Sallisaw police officer on right, is chairman of the Sallisaw Victims Unit. She said, "Domestic Violence Awareness Month is recognized nationally during October. Many local entities have partnered with our local unit over the years, and we all work together (to help those abused). We are thankful for their help and support." Officer Billy Oliver, co-chair of the unit, said, "The Sallisaw Victims Unit was created in 2006 to bridge the gap between victims and victim advocates." Other unit officials are Shawna Morris, secretary, and Debby Keith, treasurer. Assisting and working with the victims unit are Carl Albert State College, the City of Sallisaw, the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Department, Creoks, Help-in-Crisis, People Inc. and the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.
