A Sitting Peaceful Protest has been planned in downtown Sallisaw on Sunday, June 7 in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Local organizers are encouraging a "sit along" outside of the Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library from 2-4:30 p.m. Protesters are asked to stay on the lawn of the library, the gazebo area, sidewalks and parking lots on either side of the library.
"We are the people and it's time we see a change. Not only here but everywhere. We ask that we do this peacefully," organizer Katie Napier stated.
The protest was organized by Napier, Bailey Staben, and Courtney Barker.
Participants are encouraged to "wear special shirts, hold signs, and have conversations with people in your community."
"Any step in the right direction is a step towards active anti-racism, the end of police brutality, and unity/equality among all races," stated organizers of the event.
Former NFL player Kenyatta Wright of Vian is scheduled to speak.
The Sallisaw Police Dept. is aware of the event and will be present, according to Napier.
