An arrest warrant was issued May 21 for a Sallisaw man accused of beating a puppy to death with a machete.
Justin M. Ferguson, 24, faces up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000 on the felony cruelty to animals charge.
According to a police report, a Gore police officer was dispatched to the Lakehouse Kitchenettes after a manager reported that a man had killed a puppy.
When the officer arrived at the scene, he was shown the puppy’s lifeless body.
A female witness at the scene, said Ferguson walked into her house and grabbed her boyfriend’s machete and started sharpening it. Ferguson then allegedly grabbed the puppy “like it was a ball” and walked out of the house. The witness said all she heard “was the machete clanking on metal.”
Another witness said she saw Ferguson throw the puppy on the ground and swing the machete.
A neighbor, who lives next door, said she heard loud banging and yelping. She told police she went outside on her porch and saw Ferguson beating something with a machete on a metal strip beside her car. When Ferguson saw her come outside, he picked up the puppy and went back inside Trailer No. 8.
Ferguson told the officer that he didn’t have a “side” of his story to tell, but he said he never touched the puppy. He admitted that he had a machete.
Photographs were taken of the puppy and the machete. All items were collected as evidence and the animal was taken to a local veterinarian.
