Sequoyah County citizens will head to the polls June 30 to decide four political offices, and KXMX and the Sequoyah County Times have scheduled a public forum to allow voters to hear from the candidates themselves.
The forum will be held on two dates, Monday, June 8, and Monday, June 15, at the People Inc. conference center. The forums will be from 6-7:30 p.m. each night.
The goal behind splitting the forum into two dates is to have more time to focus on each race.
On June 8 candidates for Sequoyah County District 2 County Commissioner and District 15 State Representative will be featured followed by candidates for the office of Sequoyah County Sheriff and Sequoyah County Court Clerk on June 15.
Because of COVID-19, People Inc. is allowing candidates to bring only two guests. There will be no audience on hand. Sequoyah County voters can watch the forum on The Mix 105.1 Facebook page, and on Diamond Net MixTV, Channel 19.
The candidates for District 15 state representative, Sequoyah County sheriff, Sequoyah County court clerk and Sequoyah County commissioner (District 2) will discuss issues that matter to county citizens.
All candidates have confirmed their attendance at the forum.
To begin the forum, officials will draw names from a hat to determine the order of opening statements, questions and closing statements. No electronic devices will be allowed, including, but not limited to, mobile phones, iPads/tablets, teleprompter apps, etc.
Opening and closing statements are limited to three minutes for each candidate and each candidate will have two minutes to answer a direct question from the moderator, Marley Abell. The other candidate will then have two minutes to respond..
The number of questions asked will depend on the time spent on each question. The time for each race will last about 45 minutes, totaling about 90 minutes each night.
