A tractor-trailer designed to haul live chickens caught on fire Wednesday afternoon on Highway 59 north of Sallisaw and just south of Fullbright Trailer Park.

The Sallisaw Fire Dept. was dispatched at 2:54 p.m., according to Sallisaw Fire Chief Anthony Armstrong. Brushy Volunteer Fire Dept. also assisted at the scene.

Armstrong said that the driver of the semi stated the fire began under the engine compartment. He said he pulled over and attempted to put it out with a fire extinguisher but was unable to.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the tractor portion which was a total loss, according to Armstrong. No injuries were reported.

The trailer was loaded with empty containers. There were no chickens harmed in the fire.
