Cherokee Nation Veterans Center in Tahlequah

Cherokee Nation will host its annual Veterans Appreciation Day event on Friday at the Cherokee Nation Office of Veterans Affairs.

The Cherokee Nation Veterans Appreciation Day event starts at 9 a.m. and includes a wreath-laying ceremony, cultural activities, a resource fair as well as breakfast provided to veterans.

Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. will announce future steps for establishing a national Cherokee Nation Veterans Cemetery.

The Cherokee Nation estimates there are more than 4,000 Cherokee veterans. Native Americans, including Cherokees, are thought to have more citizens serving per capita than any other ethnic group, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.
