Free Thanksgiving Dinner Set For Nov. 27

A free Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixin’s is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, at the Sallisaw Middle School cafeteria, 2301 W. Ruth Ave.

The Health & Wellness Center has hosted the annual Community Partnership Thanksgiving dinner for the past five years, Marketing Director Connie Olcott said Tuesday.

“This is a community-wide event and it’s open to everyone,” Olcott said. KiBois Area Transit System will provide free transportation within Sallisaw city limits.

Community partners and donations from the public all go toward providing the annual meal. Event sponsors include the Health & Wellness Center, KiBois Community Action, People Inc., the Sallisaw NOW Coalition, Creoks, the Cherokee Nation, the Sallisaw Youth Coalition, the Central Youth Coalition, Sallisaw Public Schools and KXMX, The Mix 105.1.

Olcott said the dinner has grown every year. The first year it was held, about 400 people were served. The event has grown so large now, she said, that organizers expect to serve about 850 this year.

Olcott said volunteers are still needed to help with the meal, as well as donations of homemade desserts. Desserts may be dropped off in front of Sallisaw Middle School.

“One of our missions is to help everyone who attends walk away from the meal with the true feeling of Thanksgiving,” Olcott said.
