Sallisaw School Board Tables New Superintendent Discussion

From left, Sallisaw school board members Amanda Trudeau Hatcher, Frank Sullivan III, Justin McGrew, Bobby Qualls, Mike Daffin, plus resigned Superintendent Jeremy Jackson and Asst. Superintendent Steve Merrill.

At the noon special meeting of the Sallisaw school board Friday, members voted to table the two agenda items related to discussion of a new superintendent.

Specifically, board members tabled the “discussion, consideration and action on employment of a new Superintendent” and the “discussion, consideration and action regarding Superintendent duties during transition from resigning Superintendent to successor.” Another special meeting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 8 at the Sallisaw administration building board room.

After convening in executive session for about one hour, school board members did take action on another of the agenda items, “discussion, consideration and action on accepting resignation of Jeremy Jackson, Superintendent.”

With all school board members present, Board President Justin McGrew, Amanda Trudeau Hatcher, Frank Sullivan III, Bobby Qualls and Mike Daffin all voted in favor of accepting Jackson’s resignation.

Sullivan said the agenda for today’s meeting omitted a public comment item, and under the open meeting act, that disables the board to comment on any citizen presentation.

“If anyone wants to speak, we can hear from them,” Sullivan said, speaking of the May 8 special meeting. “If there are any concerns from anyone, the board has been all ears. We’re ready to have open doors with anyone because we know how important it is to all our kids.”

In other school board business, a budget account limit was raised from $7,500 to $20,000 in order to pay a bill within the account, according to Jackson.
