Loose Barges Threaten Dam at Webbers Falls

According to officials two barges have broken loose near Muskogee on the Arkansas River and are heading toward Lock and Dam 16. This is the dam just north of Webbers Falls.

The barges made it under the Highway 62 bridge without hitting it but officials are worried that it will strike the Lock and Dam. If it does avoid the dam, the Highway 64 Bridge between Gore and Webbers Falls and the I-40 bridge will be in danger.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) have closed I-40 from Ross Rd. in Muskogee County and Mile Marker 297 near Vian in Sequoyah County. Both eastbound and westbound lanes are shut down due to the loose barges headed toward that location.

The Town of Webbers Falls is informing residents to evacuate IMMEDIATELY. "The barges are loose and has the potential to hit Lock and Dam 16. If the dam breaks it will be catastrophic!! Leave now."

Sequoyah County Emergency Management Director Steve Rutherford stated that the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Dept. is working to help with the situation.
