The summer reading program at the Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library will be out of this world!
Themed “A Universe of Stories,” the summer reading program blasts off with the Meet Our Heroes event at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 30, in the library’s west parking lot.
Carrol Copeland, president of the Friends of the Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library, said the event will feature members of the Sallisaw Police, Sallisaw Fire Department, Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Department, Pafford EMS and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
“These heroes will show and tell about what they do,” Copeland said, adding organizers expect even more than the approximately 240 youngsters who showed up for last year’s event. “Then you can have your photo with your favorite hero.”

Julie Klineline, library assistant, said there are many other special events planned for the summer and “A Universe of Stories.”
“We have bought so many space and science books for the kids,” Klineline said. “We hope the kids will have a lot of fun and read a lot of books.”
Signups for the summer reading program start Tuesday, May 28. After a student is signed up, he or she will receive a reading log.
“Each day they bring that log in and check out books, they are entered into the drawing,” Klineline said, adding that youngsters can enter once a day by checking out books.
Readers are divided into three age divisions: Early Literacy -- from newborn to 4 years old; Children –Kindergarten through fifth grade; and Teens – from sixth through 12th grades. Two prizes of Walmart gift cards, provided by the Friends of the Library, will be awarded in each age group. The prizes will be awarded at the End of Summer Party on July 25 to wrap up the summer reading program, and Klineline said the child does not have to be present to win.
Other programs scheduled for the summer include:
June 6 – Yoga with Steve, 10 a.m. on library lawn
June 13 – Extreme Animals, 10 a.m. at library pavilion
June 20 – Hattie’s Farm Animals, 10 a.m. on library lawn
June 27 – The Hansons (juggling), 10 a.m. at Sallisaw Civic Center
July 4 – CLOSED
July 11 – The Balloon Guy, 10 a.m. at Sallisaw Civic Center
