Members of the American Legion Carnie Welch Post 27 in Sallisaw are preparing for the annual Memorial Day Service at the Sallisaw Cemetery. The service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 27, at the cemetery gazebo and the public is invited to attend.
Mike Mouzakis, Post 27 treasurer and past commander, said the service is intended to pay respect to those who have given their life for our freedoms.
“This is when we remember and honor the fallen veterans,” Mouzakis said.
The Rev. Justin Haywood will offer both the invocation and benediction; Gabrielle Gore will perform the National Anthem, accompanied by James Cheater. Post 27 Commander Kathy Albertson Shelton will welcome guests, and Frank Sullivan III will serve as emcee. The Pledge of Allegiance will be led by Paula Mouzakis.
The service will conclude with the 21-gun salute by the Post 27 Honor Guard and the playing of “Taps” by Trevor Grey.
Mouzakis said the post also makes certain each veteran buried at the cemetery has a flag placed at the marker. The post, along with the Sallisaw VFW, are asking volunteers who can to help with the placing of more than 900 small flags at each veteran’s grave at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 23, at the cemetery.
A table for flag sales and a table where poppies will be given out will be available; donations will be appreciated. The Auxiliary uses poppy proceeds for Christmas stockings for veterans in area nursing homes.
Post 27 will also hold a raffle on Memorial Day. Members are selling raffle tickets for a chance to win a Smith & Wesson M/P 45 caliber handgun. The tickets are $5 donation per ticket or five tickets for a $20 donation.
Proceeds from the gun raffle and flag sales are used for maintaining the flags displayed in town and at the cemetery and assistance with students going to Boys and Girls State.
