County residents have an opportunity to do a little more spring cleaning with a free event coming up this weekend.
The City of Sallisaw and the Cherokee Nation are hosting a free household hazardous waste collection event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday, May 25, at the Sallisaw Rodeo grounds, at 946 N. Walnut.
This waste collection event is for Sequoyah county residents only and a utility bill is required, according to organizers. Due to limited resources, the amount of material collected will be capped, and is on a first-come, first-served basis.
They encourage residents to bring tires (limit of 15, no rims, no businesses), paint, gasoline, adhesives, ammonia-based cleaners, oven cleaners, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, aerosols, drain cleaners, antifreeze, solvents, paint remover, motor oil fluids, fertilizers, weed killers, herbicides, pool chemicals, pesticides and electronics, such as TVs, computers, printers, etc.
Residents are asked NOT to bring household garbage, furniture, mattresses, radioactive materials, ammunition, compressed gas and propane cylinders, agricultural waste, explosives, unknown substances or pharmaceuticals and sharps.
This is a great way for county residents to get rid of those unwanted items that are often difficult to dispose of.
The City of Sallisaw reminds customers the city landfill will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27.
Sanitation routes will run as normal on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27; if your trash pick-up day is Monday, remember to have your poly-carts out by 7 a.m.
