Wildlife Department Offers Fishing Resources

Fall is nearly upon us, and in Oklahoma, fall means fishing. The state Wildlife Department has lots of resources for anyone interested in fishing, and its fishing guidelines offer tips for longtime anglers to novice fishermen. Be sure to scroll through all of the Fishing Resources available at wildlifedepartment.com.

The Wildlife Department is also offering virtual and in-person learning opportunities throughout the fall.  Certified volunteers will teach family fishing clinics statewide and they will have access to fishing equipment, fish stocking and literature. There will also be “Ask an Angler” clinics on topics such as streams, fall fishing, trout and wintertime catfish angling. To check out and sign up for upcoming courses, visit wildlifedepartment.com and select “Fishing” from the Event Type drop-down menu, then click “Search Events.”

Through a grant funded by the Sport Fish Restoration Program, Oklahoma State University researchers have placed reward tags on nearly 500 striped bass this summer in the Arkansas River, the lower Illinois River (below Tenkiller Dam) and the lower Canadian River (below Eufaula Dam). These tags will help researchers collect several important types of fisheries data, and anglers who catch one could score $100!

If big water is your thing, check out the state’s many lakes on the Oklahoma Fishing Trail, which is designed to highlight the best of Oklahoma fishing. The trail is organized into six loops that cover the entire state. Each loop is organized by lake and species, so no matter your fishing ambitions, you’ll find a loop that’s perfect for you. The Oklahoma Fishing Trail is a collaborative effort of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Oklahoma Tourism & Recreation Department.

Fall is the perfect time to refer a friend at the Wildlife Department, too! Refer a friend to fish or hunt this year by generating a code in your “Go Outdoors Oklahoma” account. When your friend uses your referral code to buy their first fishing or hunting license, you’ll both get a coupon to Academy for $10 off a purchase of $50. Just log in and click the “Refer a Friend” button.
