Officer Wounded During Saturday Arrest

An early morning trespassing call west of Sallisaw ended with one under arrest and a Sallisaw Police Officer with minor injuries, according to Sallisaw Police Captain Beau Gabbert.

On Saturday morning the Sallisaw Police Dept. received a report of a trespasser at a horse barn west of the old Blue Ribbon Downs Racetrack on Highway 64. When officers arrived they found Shiloh Young, 30, on the property and asked him to leave. Gabbert stated that Young refused to leave and officers attempted to place him under arrest and a scuffle ensued.

During the scuffle Young was "able to get his hands on the officer's weapon" and a shot was fired, said Gabbert.

The officer was struck by shrapnel from the bullet and received minor injuries. Gabbert stated that the officer was at home recovering and will "be fine."

Young was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, trespassing and felon in possession of a dangerous weapon.

The name of the officer is not being released at this time.
