Stigler Man Injured in Spiro Crash

A Stigler man suffered massive injuries Wednesday after an allegedly impaired driver fell asleep at the wheel on U.S. Highway 59, about three miles west of Spiro (Leflore County).

Records show that Steven Bigger, 49, of Stigler was transported by Leflore County EMS to Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, Ark., where he was listed in stable condition.

An accident report indicates that a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Colton Williams, 19, of Keota was westbound on U.S. 59 when Williams fell asleep at the wheel.

Williams’ passenger, Cody McCormick, 20, of Keota woke Williams when the vehicle left the road to the right, but he overcorrected and traveled left of center, striking a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu being driven by Bigger. McCormick was unhurt in the crash.

Bigger’s vehicle then left the roadway and rolled over, coming to rest on the driver’s side. He was pinned in the wreckage for about an hour before being extricated by the Pocola Fire Department.

Williams’ Trailblazer continued traveling forward, striking a 2019 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Erica Taylor, 33, of Vian. Taylor was uninjured in the collision.

Williams was transported by private vehicle to Baptist Hospital in Fort Smith, where he was treated and released.

Driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance is the suspected cause of the crash, the report reveals. Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt.
