A Sallisaw man was charged Sept. 23 with first-degree burglary after he allegedly broke into a home.
According to a report, a Sallisaw Police Department officer was dispatched to the home at 404 N Washington after Charles Lee Tankersley, 53, of Sallisaw refused to leave the property when asked.
Tankersley reportedly knocked the glass out of the home’s back door and forced his way into the residence, but when police arrived, he came out the front door with his hands in front of him and asked law enforcement personnel to arrest him. He was placed in handcuffs without incident.
A conversation with the victim, Tina Laymon, revealed that Tankersley had been acting strangely and she had asked him to leave her home because of his behavior. Laymon said she locked all her doors, only to have Tankersley break into the home’s back entrance. She told police she was in fear for her life and wanted the man, a family friend, gone. Laymon’s young grandchild was also in the home at the time.
Tankersley exhibited uncontrollable movements and couldn’t stop mumbling, the police report states. His odd behavior continued when he was being booked, making the process more difficult than is normally required. He was later transferred to the Sequoyah County Detention Center.
First-degree burglary is punishable by imprisonment for 7-10 years. His next court appearance is at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2.
