A man from Fultondale, Ala., was arrested on drug charges Sept. 22 after a traffic stop in Sallisaw.
According to a report, a Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Department deputy saw a black Ford Fusion with a Montana license plate exit Interstate 40 at Exit 308 and fail to stop at the intersection.
The driver, Reginald Banks, 21, gave the deputy his Alabama driver’s license for identification and a rental receipt for proof of insurance, but not before the officer noticed the man’s shaking hands and accelerated breathing.
Banks told the deputy he was returning to Alabama after a trip to Colorado Springs, Colo. When asked why he made that trip, Banks reportedly became evasive, prompting the deputy to deploy K-9 officer Monty. The dog alerted on the passenger’s side of the vehicle.
A subsequent search turned up a gray travel bag in the passenger’s front seat that contained two clear plastic bags with a green, leafy substance inside. Another bag was found to contain 25 bottles of 45 mg THC gummies.
Banks was arrested on charges of unlawful possession of a controlled drug with intent to distribute, a felony, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. He was transported to the Sequoyah County Jail.
The drugs were sent to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for further testing.
Banks was released on $11,000 bond.
The felony drug charge is punishable by up to five years in the Department of Corrections and a fine of up to $20,000. The paraphernalia charge carries a punishment of up to one year in prison, a fine of up to $1,000 or both.
