A convicted felon from Sallisaw faces a weapons charge after his arrest Sept. 19.
Records show that Isaac Johnathon Smith, 33, was charged with possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction. He was convicted in 2014 of possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
Two officers with the Sallisaw Police Department were patrolling South Kerr Boulevard on Sept. 19 when they saw a red Dodge pickup with a paper tag go over the center line.
When the officers stopped the vehicle they encountered the driver, Robert Clifton Smith, 71, and his passenger, Isaac Smith, a known felon in the Sallisaw area.
While speaking with the elder Smith, an officer noticed a rifle lying in the back seat. The officers knew Isaac Smith was a felon, so they asked him to step out of the vehicle. When he did, officers also found a .22-caliber pistol in the floor where he had been sitting.
Both men were handcuffed and transported to the Sallisaw Police Department. The younger Smith was released on $10,000 bond. His next court appearance is at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 9.
Isaac Smith’s weapons charge, a felony, is punishable by imprisonment for 1-10 years.
