The Sallisaw Police Department issued a scam alert on Wednesday, warning residents that a scam artist was making phone calls, claiming to be the police department and asking for money to avoid a warrant.
The police department does not make such phone calls, the alert advises.
The alert reports, “The Sallisaw Police has been notified that people have received phone calls showing the Sallisaw Police Department's phone number. The caller is identifying himself as an officer with the Sallisaw Police Department and stating that person has outstanding warrants. They offer to let you pay for the warrant using a credit card over the phone to clear the warrant or they threaten to send an officer to arrest you.
“Please note this isn't the Sallisaw Police Department calling. The Sallisaw Police Department will NOT contact anyone by phone to attempt to receive any type of payments or collection of warrants. If you receive any of these calls please contact the Sallisaw Police Department.”
