The Sallisaw community came together Monday evening to show its appreciation to teachers and staff at Sallisaw Public Schools in the wake of a days-long teacher walkout to rally for education funding.
Sallisaw mother of three Rachel Fair said the idea popped into her head last Friday to do something special for the Sallisaw teachers.
“I wanted to do this to show our support for the teachers and let them know we’re behind them,” said Fair, who has two middle school students and one high school student at Sallisaw schools. “We appreciate all the hard work they have put through for this, and we just wanted to support them.”
So Fair started asking for donations and she found that many more wanted to pitch in and help.
In less than four days, Fair had rallied support from others appreciative of the efforts of the school staff, and a meal for 200 had been planned, catered by Charlie’s Chicken and Mazzio’s Pizza. Individuals donated desserts and drinks.
Approximately 135 school employees attended the Community Teacher Appreciation Dinner Monday night at the Sallisaw Middle School cafeteria, with a menu of chicken chunks, pulled pork, beans, rolls, pizza and desserts.
Fair said her husband wasn’t certain she would be able to pull off the event in such a small amount of time.
“But it happened,” she said, “thanks to everybody who donated and volunteered.
