First Case of COVID-19 in Sequoyah County

The first positive test for the novel coronavirus ( COVID-19) has been received in Sequoyah County.

Health and city officials can not yet use the word "confirmed" until the official release and confirmation from the Oklahoma State Health Department (OSDH) later this morning.

The individual was tested in Sallisaw and immediately sent home to self-quarantine while waiting on the test results. Officials received word of the positive test results late Tuesday night.

The individual is believed to be a resident of Sallisaw and remains in quarantine at their residence and will do so until cleared by health officials.

Sallisaw Mayor Ernie Martens stated Wednesday morning that the City of Sallisaw will be releasing an official statement and proclamation later this morning after receiving the official confirmation from the OSDH.

"We don't have a guidebook for this. We are doing the best we can with the information we have in order to keep our people safe and also try to keep doing business as usual in Sallisaw as much as possible," Martens stated.

  3. Wowsers. You think you have an inalienable right to know the medical history of someone because you're scared? If you don't know who it is, then it doesn't matter much because you've likely not been in contact with them. Chill out.

  4. It would be nice to know where they worked before they were sent home.

  5. It's a world wide pandemic, I completely agree with knowing where the person works. I have a family and would like to continue having them all alive. It's not a matter of being scared it a matter of being cautious it's more or less common sense. I bet on anything the place of employment of said individual is most likely still open and never shut its doors to disinfect everything. So yes I believe it should be public information. Could care less about his/her name but employer should be know. Common sense ‍♂️ you want this virus to stop and think for a minute how stupid it is to withhold this sensitive information from the people that live in the general but we wont know cause you people are to worried about " telling someone's name "

I dont get how we are supposed to be preventive in any way with the so called argument to withhold this info.

    1. Stay home like Every news channel and the CDC tells you to. Only go out if you have to.Stay 3-6 feet away from other people when u do go out. Wash your hands frequently and clean frequently touched items like doorknobs, liked switches and counter tops. If you're scared then follow these guidelines to a T.

    2. If you're that worried then you aren't following the CDC guidelines. You're not staying at home and away from people. It doesn't matter who it is. This a small town. They've gone everywhere you have. It's like cockroaches, if there's 1 then there are 100's more. We Al go to the same stores, same gas stations, same restraints, etc... So watch any news channel or go to the CDC website and see what you should be doing. Be proactive , not reactive. Right now you are obviously being reactive. OMG Who is it? Where did they work? Who were they around? Answer they are your next door neighbor, they were around someone you know, they are and shopped at the same places you did! If we want to slow this thing down we have to alter our lives for awhile. Yeah it suvks but hopefully we will live through this. You can't just go on thinking you can live life as usual and it's someone else that has it. You or your kids could have it right now and not know it yet but be spreading it without knowing it. Stay home! Don't have visitors. Only go out if u have to. Wash ur hands, wash ur hands, wash ur hands.

  7. Yes Mayor there is a book, it’s called the CDC! And people, it’s called the privacy act. You all are acting like a 1950’s lynch mob! Did you think it wouldn’t affect you? Have you not been take precautions? Stay home if you can or you will be forced to! Wash your hands! Don’t touch your face! Don’t hoard food. You live in tornado alley, the first time you lose electricity all your food will go bad and then there won’t be any food in the grocery store to replace it! Be compassionate!

  14. What if this person doesn't work? What if they're a senior citizen? How would it be anyone's business if this is the case Not everybody is employed or has been employed lately. They could have gotten this at church, the store, someone could have brought it to their home, etc.

  15. Follow the CDC guidelines. Stay home if you can. If you can then try to keep a distance of 3 to 6 feet from other people. Wash your hands frequently. Clean frequently touched surfaces. If you're sick DONT LEAVE YOUR HOuSE! Call your Dr. If you think u need a test ask your Dr for a referral to be tested at the drive Thru testing site in Ft. Smith. Stay away from everyone else! Assume that if u have it then your family does too so don't let your kids be outside playing with mine just because they don't have any symptoms. It doesn't matter who this person is. If there is one case then there are others we just don't know about so assume that everyone has it! Rant Over!
