A Sallisaw man pleaded not guilty May 13 to a domestic assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charge, a felony.
David Seth Mantil, 42, faces up to one year in the county jail or up to 10 years in prison on that charge. He was also charged with malicious injury to property, a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500, imprisonment in the county jail for up to a year or both.
His next court appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 17.
According to an arrest report, at about 12:40 a.m. on May 12, a Sallisaw police officer was dispatched to a home on Interstate Circle in reference to Mantil possibly destroying property outside the home.
When the officer arrived at the residence, Mantil’s father, Cecil explained that David Mantil had been using methamphetamine and “acting like he was out of his mind.” Cecil said his son had knocked his mailbox off its post. Shortly before calling the police, Cecil said David Mantil was standing over him while holding what appeared to be a pocketknife in his hands while Cecil was lying in bed. Cecil said his son had pointed the knife downward and was grasping it with both hands as if he was going to stab him.
Cecil said David Mantil told him that if Cecil did not get up and go outside to tell the “demons” to leave him alone, that he would stab not only his father but Johnny Mantil and himself and would burn the house down.
