Eastside Elementary to Honor Veterans with Program

Students practice and prepare for their big performance
on Thursday in honor of Veterans Day.

One local elementary school is honoring area veterans with a special program Thursday ahead of the Veterans Day observance.

This is the second year Eastside Elementary fourth grade students have presented a program honoring the men and women who have served our country.

Eastside music teacher Traci Abell said students have been preparing for the program since school started in August.

“We started getting ready on the first day of school,” said Abell. “We’ve learned little by little over the last three months.”

Students are now in rehearsals putting together the entire program, which includes a play intermingled with song and dance. Guests can expect a well-rounded program featuring the various talents of the students, according to Abell.

“Not only are we showing our appreciation to our veterans, but these kids are able to show off their talents,” Abell said. “We have incredible singers, dancers and acrobatics.”

The finale of the show even features a boy’s ensemble doing a black light performance to “God Bless the U.S.A.”

Abell said the annual program has become a passion of hers.

“Veterans Day means a lot to me because of the veterans in my family,” Abell said. “I want to instill that same appreciation of our veterans in these kids at a young age.”

Area residents and veterans are invited to attend one of the three programs – at 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday – at Eastside Elementary’s gymnasium at 1206 E. Creek in Sallisaw.
