Local Organizations Host Back to School Giveaways

It may be mid-summer, but the new school year is only a month away, and stores have already begun to put out school supplies.

The Sallisaw Pastor’s Fellowship is leading the Back-to-School Giveaway this year, according to the Rev. Kory Boster. In conjunction with area businesses including the VFW, KiBois, People Inc., the Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce and Catholic Charities, the fellowship will give away school supplies for children in need from 9 a.m. until noon on Thursday, Aug. 2 at the Sallisaw Civic Center next to the police station. This giveaway is for students in Sallisaw, Central, Gans and Vian only.

The person picking up supplies must have identification, such as Social Security cards, for all the children. If someone other than the parent is picking up the supplies, they must have a letter from the parent and identification for the child. CDIB cardholders are not eligible for school supplies at this giveaway. They will receive supplies after school begins. For more information call, 918-775-6111.

Another school supply giveaway is for Sequoyah County students only.

The Back to School Roundup 2018, held in conjunction with the 75th annual Sallisaw Lions Club Rodeo, is slated for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Sallisaw Rodeo Arena.

The first 400 students registered will receive a backpack stuffed with school supplies. Royce Alverson, community liaison for KiBois Community Action, said only Sequoyah County students will receive the backpacks.

In addition to the backpacks, lots of fun and games and activities are planned for the event, such as inflatables and pony rides.

The Back to School Roundup is made possible by a host of community partners, including KiBois Community Action, People Inc., TSET Healthy Living, CREOKS, Sallisaw Health & Wellness Center, Sallisaw and Central Youth Coalitions, Cherokee Nation, Boys & Girls Club of Sequoyah County, Sallisaw Lions Club and the Mix 105.1.

Alverson said children are welcome to come enjoy the fun, even if they don’t need school supplies.

If anyone is interested in donating school supplies, they can be dropped off at Sallisaw Health & Wellness Center, People Inc. or KiBois Community Action in Sallisaw.
