Students at Central Elementary School had a tough start to the school year when flooding caused a train derailment that closed the school for days.
What they didn’t know at the time was employees at Cherokee Casino and Hotel Roland were collecting much-needed items to donate to the elementary school.
Casino officials recently surprised the administration and students with nearly 200 items, including crayons, markers, notebooks, scissors, pencils and lots of glue sticks.
“It’s quite humbling. Wow. It means a lot to know the casino employees donated these items on their own. Every school in the state needs supplies, and they chose us. That’s great,” said Central Elementary Principal Beverly Cawhorn. “After the start we’ve had to the school year, this is a big boost for us. We’re extremely thankful to the casino and the employees who did this for us. We’ll make sure it’s all put to good use.”
CIT employees from each casino host a drive for a school in their community that could benefit from additional supplies.
“It’s no secret our public schools continue to be in great need for the necessary supplies to provide a quality education,” said Chad McReynolds, Cherokee Casino and Hotel Roland general manager. “I’m proud of our employees for stepping up on their own and contributing so many items that will positively impact the lives of young students at Central Elementary.”
