Sallisaw Mayor Withdraws from Race

Sallisaw Mayor Julie Ferguson has withdrawn her candidacy to run for that post again.

Sequoyah County Election Board officials said Ferguson, who has served one term in office, withdrew from the race late Wednesday afternoon.

The filing period for the Feb. 14 election closed at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The deadline to withdraw or contest a filing is at 5 p.m. Friday.

The Sallisaw mayor’s race will have three vying for the post. George Bormann filed his declaration of candidacy on Tuesday. Bob Riggs and Jim Hudgens, who is a Sallisaw city commissioner, filed their declarations on Wednesday.

Sallisaw Police Chief Terry Franklin was the only one filing for that post, and will be returned to office automatically.

Most school board races are uncontested, with only one person filing for the posts. Two have filed for Office No. 2 on the Marble City School Board of Education, and the board member will be determined by the Feb. 14 vote.
