While the westbound lanes of U.S. 64 have now been opened as flood waters have receded, the eastbound lanes remain closed.
Kenna Mitchell, Public Information Manager for Div. 8 with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, said officials were waiting for flood waters to recede this week so they could assess the bridges.
“We currently have EB US-64 closed between the I-40 junction near Roland and the SH-64D junction near Moffett until further notice,” Mitchell said. “So far we have found damage under two bridges caused by flooding and are working on repair plans.”
Mitchell said ODOT officials are very early in this process and there is still some flooding in these areas.
She said drivers in eastern Sequoyah County will need to continue to use the eastbound I-40 detour through Dora on Highway 64D to the now-open Garrison Avenue bridge for the foreseeable future to get into Fort Smith.
