Early Voter Turnout May Be a Record

The voter turnout for early voting on Thursday is most likely a record.

Cindy Osborn, Sequoyah County Election Board secretary, said 572 voters cast their ballots in the in-house, in-person absentee voting on Thursday.

Osborn, who has been with the election board for 23 years, said she does not remember a heavier voter turnout on an early-voting day.

“It may very well be a record,” Osborn said. She explained that the statistics from previous years were stored and not easily accessible.

Osborn said almost 900 absentee ballots had been sent out earlier but only about 300 have been returned as of Thursday.

Early voting at the election board office in Sallisaw continued on Friday and will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday. The polls on Tuesday will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
