November is Native American Heritage month, and the Carl Albert State College (CASC) libraries have planned special recognitions at both Poteau and Sallisaw campuses.
The Delores O’Guin Mitchell Library on the Sallisaw campus currently has an educational display about the Cherokee Nation.
In addition, the Cherokee National Treasures presentation will be presented by the Cherokee Nation and CASC from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Stites Room of CASC-Sallisaw. Cherokee artisans will be on hand to share their talents including Dorothy Ice, Richard Fields, Victoria Mitchell-Vazquez, and Jane Osti.
The CASC Native American FAS-TRACC Program (NASNTI) is bringing the Cherokee National Treasures to Sallisaw along with assistance from CASC’s Bryan Warner, who serves on the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council.
According to CASC NASNTI Project Coordinator Aaron Emberton, “With roughly 33 percent of CASC's enrollment identifying as Native American, CASC implemented the Native American FAS-TRACC Program in an effort to increase the success of our Native American students. One avenue for ensuring success is providing programs that are culturally relevant to our students. In addition, our faculty and staff benefit by gaining a deeper understanding of the culture of the students they serve.”
Warner said he looks forward to other opportunities in the near future to showcase Cherokee culture and history at the Sallisaw campus.
The Joe E. White Library on the Poteau campus currently has a display about Native Americans, with an emphasis on the Choctaw Nation. Included in the display are pieces of original artwork, hand-made clothing, and beadwork. Choctaw dancers will perform at the library on the Poteau campus at 11 a.m. Tuesday. CASC student Karen Crosby is the reigning Miss Choctaw Nation, and will be speaking on Nov. 15. CASC Director of Libraries Terri Carroll offered a special thank you to Jennifer Roberts, Choctaw Nation Career Counselor, for her donations to the Poteau display.
The public is encouraged to visit one or both displays and presentations in the upcoming days.
