Beginning at 6:10 p.m. area law enforcement officials held a press conference with media regarding an "ongoing situation" in Sequoyah County as described by Sheriff Ron Lockhart. An incident command center has been set up at the administration building of the Sallisaw Public School system. The "situation" does not involve the school system in any way.
According to Sheriff Lockhart, he was notified at 10:00 a.m. this morning that there is an "ongoing situation" occurring on Cherokee tribal land. Several law enforcement agencies, including the Cherokee Marshal Service, are involved in this situation however they are currently not releasing any details. Farm Road, near the old Blue Ribbon Downs Racetrack, is currently blocked off from all traffic.
Sheriff Lockhart indicated that other media outlets are reporting that the Cherokee Casino Sallisaw is under lock down but he emphasized that this is incorrect. The casino is not under lock down at this time. According to authorities the situation continues to evolve and they will be releasing more information later tonight.
