Earlier this afternoon deputies and investigators from the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Department were called to the scene of a shooting north of Muldrow. According to Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart, the victim in the shooting had gone to the residence of Billy Ray Smith to collect a debt allegedly owed to him by Smith. A verbal altercation occurred which lead the victim to state that he would be taking property from the residence that equaled the amount owed to him. At this time, Smith allegedly retrieved a rifle and started firing toward the vehicle that the victim was driving. One round went through the back window of the victim's truck as he attempted to drive away. Although the bullet did not strike the victim injuries were sustained. The injuries sustained are not life threatening.
According to Sheriff Lockhart, Billy Ray Smith was taken into custody and charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm after former conviction of a felony.
