Crash Sends One to Hospital

In an update to a story we brought you on the day of the accident, a Gans man had to be extricated from his pickup truck Dec. 31 in Sallisaw and transported to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital in Sallisaw for his injuries after another vehicle hit him head-on. Sallisaw police reported Benny Allen Mullins, 63, of Bunch was driving his 2002 white Chevrolet pickup south on Maple Street in Sallisaw when he went left of center and struck a north-bound 2009 white Chevrolet pickup driven by Harold Edward McKeehen, 61, of Gans. Police reported McKeehen saw Mullins' truck coming and swerved right, but could not avoid the collision. McKeehen's truck then struck and knocked down about 20 feet of a home-owner's fence, and debris from the crash struck the home-owner's boat, causing damage to the boat's canopy and bracket. The Sallisaw Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to rescue McKeehen from his pickup, and he was transported to the hospital by Pafford EMS. Police reported Mullin said he closed his eyes, and when he opened them it was too late to avoid the collision. By Sally Maxwell, Senior News Director
