Accident Sends Sallisaw Men to Hospital

A Sallisaw man was transported by Medi Flight to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa after a two-vehicle accident that occurred Wednesday at 7 p.m. on U.S. Highway 64 approximately one mile east of Sallisaw.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) reported Jorge Schmitz, 47, was driving a 2006 Ford Mustang eastbound on U.S  64 when he attempted to make a U-turn and his vehicle stalled out in the middle of the roadway.

Schmitz's vehicle was struck on the passenger side, according to the OHP report, by a westbound Dodge 250 truck driven by Justin Thomas, 31, of Sallisaw.

Schmitz was admitted to St. Francis in stable condition with leg and internal injuries. Thomas refused treatment at the scene.

A passenger in Thomas's vehicle, Tanner Poindexter, 21, was transported by Pafford EMS to Baptist Hospital in Ft. Smith where he was treated for a head injury and later released.

The OHP reported the cause of the accident was an improper turnabout. Seatbelts were not in use by Schmitz or Poindexter but were in use by Thomas.
