OSBI to Investigate Officer-related Shooting

Muldrow Police Chief George Lawson is directing all requests for information about an officer-related shooting to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), but the OSBI information officer was unavailable for comment on Friday.

A standoff at the Executive Inn, at Main and I40 in Muldrow, began about 4:30 p.m. and concluded about three hours later when the male suspect fired a gun at police, and a Muldrow officer fired back, injuring but not killing the suspect.

Lawson said the man was air lifted to Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith then later to the University of Arkansas Medical School in Little Rock. His name and condition were not released at this time.

Lawson reported, “At around 4:30 p.m. we received a call in reference to a male with a gun at the Executive Inn. A stand-off with negotiations occurred for almost three hours until the suspect fired one round at officers and Assistant Chief Tim Keith responded by firing one round.”

Lawson continued, “Assistant Chief Keith has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation of departmental policy while the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is handling the criminal investigation. All questions regarding this investigation should be directed to the OSBI Public Information Officer.”

It is normal procedure for police officers involved in shootings to be placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
